Another post right after another!

GBJazzMan| March 6, 2007 3:44 pm

Again at Panera with Brad. This time, however, was because I called him to get help with a flat tire. If the Bismarck was a video game monster, you’d have to defeat the tires before you can fight the Bismarck itself.

Tonight we’re going out for my Dad’s birthday. I don’t think any of you care that my dad is 53, but I did want to mention that his back surgery was a success a month or so ago. He’s back doing basically everything he was before the surgery: work, poker, driving. He just can’t lift anything over 15 pounds. I know I mentioned that he had surgery, but I don’t think I ever mentioned how successful it was or not.

So my experiment with Linux is going great. I can play Fallout 2 on my laptop now, which is tits.

Anyway, I’m out.

Brad and I decided that the smooth Jazz reminds us of Sim City 3000 sound track. Now I want to play it.

In the words of Phil Laak, I played some real good A+ genius poker this weekend. At the home game, I did really well, making about 20 bucks off the deal. It started off not so good. In the first game, I misplayed trips and Will turned a full house of me. And while we waited for John and Doty to arrive, we dicked around with stud and Omaha, and when I finally got a hand ( a straight, for people keeping score) and two people had flushes and Will had a full house. So I figured it was gonna be one of those nights.

The second game was more of the same, but then my luck turned. I went all in against Will, John and Tom with Big Slick, and knocked out both of ‘em. I back my way in to Second place that game. The last game, I was on fire, making the right plays at the right time and laying down a beat hand.  It was some of the best poker I’ve played.

I’ve recently installed Linux on my laptop, and I think I’m gonna start blogging about my interaction with it. Should be interesting.

I love Razz

GBJazzMan| January 15, 2007 11:47 pm

Razz, for people who don’t know, is a variant of 7 card stud where the object is to make the lowest 5 card hand possible. I love it. I don’t know if I have some special Razz sixth sense or if the average poker player just sucks at Razz but I can call what my opponents hands are.

Needless to say, I like it alot.

What has been happening in the world of Matt

The holidays were okay, first off, except for the fact that everyone in my imidate family was sick. Mom and Dad both had a 48 hour stomach flu the week before Christmas. Puking and all. I had an allergic reaction to somethign I ate at Doty’s the week after Christmas and I had to goto the ER. That being said, 50ml of Benedryl through an IV is fun. Also, Dad’s gonna need to have surgery on his back and has been off of work since mid December. So yes, we’ve been one big happy family.

The haul for Christmas wasn’t bad, I got some money (most of which I’ve pissed away playing poker, more on that later), some DVD (If you haven’t seen Stargate: Atlantis, do yourself a favor and do it.) and some books. Not bad, really. I got a $25 iTunes giftcard from my Uncle Jim and Aunt Nancy (is it said the relatives who most “get” me are the ones I only see on the holidays?), and I’ve barely put a dent on it. I guess they need to make some decent music.
So, yeah, the Law of Averages has been hating on me a lot lately. On Thursday, I went to the Bingo hall to play poker, and I had Queens full cracked by quad sixes. The dude did slow roll them to perfection, I’m just glad I made the correct read. I seriously don’t think I’ve gotten a flush in atleast 3 weeks. I’m just gonna play it tight and wait for the cards to hit. To make it even worse, on Thursday I was playing Blood Bowl against Brad, and he proceeded to kill two of my guys, and KO atleast 7 of them. His team’s got the same Armor as mine, and yet, I didn’t break armor once.

Speaking of hard shots, Mom and I bought Dad the WSOP PS2 game to help from going insane. The way I understand it, a disk has buldge in his back, and that’s pitching a nerve that is cause the intense pain that he’s under. He can’t sit up straight for more than a half an hour. And he does like to play online poker, and we figured this would be a decent substitute. Better than the GBA game I bought him, anyway.

So he and I have been tag teaming tourneys and such on that, and I’m starting to get my eye back. That is, I’m recognizing the weird ass straight that people hit. We’re a bit at odds tho, because although we both enjoy hold ‘em, he likes Omaha and Omaha HiLo Split, and I like Razz.  Also, HORSE tourneys are lots of fun.

Today in VB, Noah and I made a simple RPG. I basically wanted to see if I could do it, which I could. Right now it’s a single form program that only hands combat at the moment, but I’m working on getting a market set up. And by market I mean Ye Olde WalMarte. We were both ahead in class and didn’t really have anything else better to do. Kinda makes me want to dust off my perl skillz and make a textbased RPG in perl.

I haven’t done any writing lately (::hides from the Wrimos::). I just haven’t had any ideas. I do now, tho, and unless I get sucked into watching a shitty movie with Dad (Atomic Train was awful), I’ve got some ideas. I think I’m gonna do the whole “carry a small notepad for ideas” idea.

Also, may pokemans, let me show you them.

I am amazed

Dad and I went to the Bingo hall tonight, and I played really well. I sat down with $60, and I walked away with $180. I was down to thirty at one point. To be honest I was in a zone like I’ve never been on. The most marginal hand I played all night all night was 9-8 of spades, which I will explain now, because it is quite the story.

I was on the button with 9-8 of spades and I thought to myself, I shouldn’t play this. But two for suited connectors was too good to pass up. The blinds didn’t raise so I was ready to see the floop. 10 of clubs, jack of spades and queen of spades. Not only did I flop a straight, but I also flopped a flush and a straight flush draw. It checks around to me, I bet, and I get two callers. Turn is the seven of spades, bam, there’s the flush. There’s a bet, I raise it, the one guy folds and the orginial better calls. River’s a ten of hearts, and I really didn’t want to see the board to pair, so I check, he bets I call, and he’s got tens full of sevens, with the ten of diamonds and the seven of clubs. He had 3 friggin outs. the Ten of hearts, and the other two sevens. Because if it had be the Ten of spades, he would have made his full house, but I would have made the straight flush, and that would have been the best hand ever.

That hand put me down to thirty, and I was on tilt, I’m not even going to lie. But I tightened up and started to play better. We stopped playing an hour and a half ago, and I’m still amazed at how well I played.

Also, Rob and Big on MTV? Hilarious.

Happiness is taking money from suckers

The Knights of Colombus run a poker room out of the bingo hall on Van Slyke by the planets, and Dad and I decided to check it out. I sat down with $60, and walked away with a touch over $100. Which is pretty good considering I was down to $12 at one point. I had some decent hands too, trip 7s, tens full of kings, a couple of Nut Flushs, and Ace high straight (which was a gut shot, btw).

Dad didn’t do as well but I have more experience playing at a table than he does. One things we both noticed was that the quality of players was not as good as at Soaring Eagle. There was one guy at my table who would visably shake whenever he decided to call with a draw of some sort. And there was a guy at Dad’s table that would play about anything.

I got my schedule for class for next quarter, and it’s a bit on the strange side. I’ve got a night class on Thursday, and morning classes on Friday and Saturday. Ce La Vie, I guess.

My Nano is still chugging along. I didn’t write in it today, but that’s what I get for buying FFXII. Which is a good game, I recommend it to anyone.

Sorry about that, now with your regularily scheduled blog.

I went to Soaring Eagle last weekend and had a much better outcome than I did last time. Yes, I still finished down, but I was only down $5 and I played much better, also. For example: There was a guy at the end of the table who played basically every hand and had gotten lucky on the river alot, and would hoot and hollar when he did. Well, here’s what happened. I had pocket jacks in middle position and called the big blind. The flop was 6d 6s 8s. So I had two pair, I bet he calls. Next card is a 4h. Again, I bet, he calls. With the exception of the 6′s, the board is clean, and he wasn’t playing aggressively enought to have trips, so I’m guessing he’s got spades. River card is the Jack of Spades. I’ve got a full house, so unless he’s been slowplaying quad sixes, I’ve got him beat, and I hope he’s got the flush. So I bet, he raise and I call. He flips over Ace, Queen of Spades. “I’ve got the nuts!” he’s hollaring like he had just won the WSOP. I decided to have some fun with him. “Wow, that’s pretty good.” I paused. “Too bad I’ve got Jacks full of sixes.”

He was cursing that hand for the next ten minutes. I went on to have Jacks full of sixes a couple of more times that night. I also had quad queens, which wasn’t the best hand I saw all night. The guy next to me had a royal flush.

Also, apparently, one of the Catholic churches run a charity cash game on the weekend and dad and I are thinking about going and checking it out.

Work’s been there, not a whole lot to talk about there. I did see something funny tho the other day. I was walking into work and a white trash couple was walking out of work. Their one kid was just screaming for whatever reason, and the mom said, and I quote because I’m not this orginal, “If you don’t shut the hell up, I’m gonna drop you on your fucking head.”

Flint parenting at its finest.

This quarter is almost over, and next week is the last week of class, I can’t hardly believe it. I mean, I’m still glad I went back to school but this semister has flew by.

My NaNo is going well. I’m over the 11k word mark, and I haven’t hit any writers block yet. I still haven’t decided if I want to post it here or set up another blog for it. Something I’ll have to think about.

Nothing else much has been happening in Matt-Land, except that voting yesterday has caused my carpel tunnel to flair up. Stupid scantron ballets.
