Ice can giveth and Ice can taketh away

GBJazzMan| January 5, 2008 9:03 pm

So I got home from hanging out with Caitlin, right? And I slipped in the driveway and rolled my ankle under my body. Which really sucks. It’s not broken and at worse it’s probably sprained. Lucky for me a buddy of mine is giving me a ride to poker, so that’s good. But I say it giveth because the Wings shutout the Dallas Stars earlier today. Oh well, what are you gonna do.

I also bought the Lifehacker book and I hope it will be full of productivity goodness.

I hate having cravings when it is cold as shit outside

GBJazzMan| January 3, 2008 11:01 pm

So I wanted some Coke, but we were out, so I had to drive to 7-11 and it is fucking cold out there.  I mean, crap, man.

I hate listening to the Fox in the morning. For people don’t know, the Fox is the local classic rock station here in Flint. I really don’t like listening to them. Not necessarily because of the music we play, although I’m not really a Zeppelin or Floyd fan. Mainly because all of their DJs sound like every DJ stereo type ever. Also the fact that they all sound to be still living in 70s. I swear if Banana didn’t play the Bob and Tom I wouldn’t even listen that station.

I had such huge plans today for after work. I was gonna get some cleaning done, do some other work, maybe call Cat, but I slept. Partially to blame was the paint fumes from work. They had us paint a wall green for use as a green screen and I think the paint fumes got to me a bit. Combine that with the fact that I took a benedryl after dinner and I was done for the count. I sometimes hate holiday weeks because of the fact that it feels that I never get anything done.

Yesterday, Rach commented on using my moleskine to keep track of stuff and probably tomorrow I’ll show what I was using it for.

And now your moment of Zen: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2XD8D47CtnA

First post of the new year

GBJazzMan| 12:28 am

Don’t you just hate it when you sit down to post and you totally forget what you’re gonna post? Yeah, that totally just happened to me.

I have decided to make some personal changes this year. I’m going to loose weight and start eating right. I didn’t get right of the bat with it, but I figured hey, whatever, as long as it gets done it gets done, yeah? I’ve been reading sites like Lifehacker and such and I’m going to try to stick to a quasi-GTD philosophy.  I don’t know if I have the displine to do GTD to the letter, but my moleskine planner is working out pretty nicely. I’m actually going to try to get a book about this sort of thing. I really waste too much time not really doing anything.

On that note, how was everyone’s New Years? Hopefully more exciting than mine. Hopefully next post is more interesting

A late Merry Christmas

GBJazzMan| December 26, 2007 11:22 am

I hope everyone’s Christmas was save and fun. Mine was, but that’s because my mom’s side of the family didn’t implode in any way, shape or form.

My haul was pretty good. A couple of DVDs, a really nice coffee pot and a pair of headphones were just the big ones on the list. I also got a gig of ram, which I lucked out on. I asked for 1 to 3 gig of ram, because my computer can support up to four gig and it’s only got one right now. Well, turns out that my mobo only has two ram slots on it, so I’m kinda glad that my parents didn’t buy me three one-gig sticks.

I did come to the realization that I need to clean my computers more. I was amazed at how filthy that thing had gotten since the last time I had done anything with it. I’ve decided that every three months I’m going to clean all of my computers, just because having that much dust in them is not good for the computer itself.

I got to play Portals and Team Fortress 2 at Will’s over the weekend and I can say that both of those games are fantastic. TF2 is just a blast to play, even tho I suck at it, and Portals was a refreshing change of pace, regardless of whether or not the cake is a lie. I probably would have played more but the TF2 server Will and I were playing on got overrun with greffers, and we decided to call it a night.

That’s all I got for now. Atleast it’s a post, yeah?

This is Matt. He is getting shit done.

GBJazzMan| December 19, 2007 4:41 pm

Have you ever had one of those days when you just start working on stuff and you find it hard to slow down? That’s the way I’ve been today. On my Wednesday’s I don’t go home during th middle of the day because I the school is now farther from my house than it used to be. I mean, I’ve gotten a good chunk of my homework done so I don’t have to do anything over break. I’ve gotten other stuff done and I feel great. Actually doing things as opposed to just sitting on my ass is awesome.

Keeping my mind busy also has the added effect of keeping my mind from wandering into doom and gloom, which is its want during the winter. Am I doing the right thing with my life, etc. As long as I’m working to better myself and to hopefully better the future, the less I need to worry about and the less that I will worry about.

On a slightly geekier note, I got my spare box working and I think I’m going to use that to join the ubuntu testing team. I want to get more involved in the opensource community, and since I don’t know how to code in C or Lisp, I figured this was the best way to do that.

It’s currently great time to be Matt, and I’m positive that the end of 2007 and the start of 2008 will be awesome too. Watch, now that I’ve mentioned that, it’s gonna suck balls. And probably by mentioning it’ll suck it’s going to suck. Or whatever.

Anyway, I’m out, later.

My job varies from day to day!

GBJazzMan| December 14, 2007 7:14 pm

Some days, I’m a system administrator, some days I’m a customer help tech. Today? Today I was a janitor.  After doing my normal beginning of the shift check to make sure that no one had trashed any of the rooms, I discovered that someone had dripped pop all down the hall. And guess who got to clean it up? You know, I’m not complaining, but days like this are boring. I’ve been in the library for two hours. Alteast I got some homework done.

Don’t you hate it when you go someplace, wanting to buy something and then you told forget about it? I went to Barnes and Nobles this afternoon to kill some time before work. I wandered around aimlessly for a few and left to finish my shitty shitty coffee. And as I was pulling out onto Miller Rd, I remembered like half of the books that I wanted. Now you’re all thinking that I should just wait until Christmas, because I might get these as gifts. Not likely. I didn’t ask for any of these books for Christmas. Ohh well, I have an iphone, you’d think I’d write some of these stuff down.

Any back to work, enjoy Internets

Oops

GBJazzMan| December 12, 2007 8:36 pm

It would be a lie to say that I forgot about my blog. It would a truth to say that I did remember it and just was too lazy to post. I’m sitting at the library at work, making sure that the whole zero people here besides myself don’t steal anything, so I decided to update this bad mama-jama.

Things have been interesting in Matt Land, to which I immediately started humming the old Batman theme, but only with MattLand instead of Batman.

I got a new laptop. I broke Chiyo because I was being careless. The powercord got wrapped around the arm of the chair I was sitting in and when I went to pick it up, breaking the powersocket on the laptop in the process. So with a little help from my parents, I’m the proud owner of a Dell Inspiron 1501. It’s faster and lighter than my old laptop, and it runs Linux. What more could I ask for?

I won a poker tourney a couple of weeks ago. I played in a $25 buy-in tourney at the Palace Poker Room that had 62 people in it. I was the last player with chips and got $455 as winnings. I felt I played well, while not having very many “monster hands”. I had a lot of pairs and two pairs, and a couple of straights, but very few trips and flushes, and no full houses or better. I only misplayed one hand in my oppinion, and that was me hitting a straight on the turn against trips. I had a feeling that my hand was good, but the board was too messy for me to really make a move. Best poker I’ve played in a while but I haven’t been able to do anything since.

I won National Novel Writing Month, yet my novel is no where near complete. It a novel based on the comic that Mike and I are working on, and that I promise will continue to work on now that Nano is done with. While writing an Nano based on the comic was a very fulfilling exercise from the standpoint of getting the background of the comic fleshed out, I would not do it again. It was painful at times. Nano was a very cool experience, like always, and I managed to meet some very cool people in the process.

I just found out that one of my  classmates had to take a quarter off because he found out, by fainting, that he was diabetic. My thoughts and prayers are with him while he recovers.

I’ve been fighting a little bit of a cold the last couple of days, and as such I’ve been living off of Advil Cold and Sinus. That stuff is a God-send.

Well, that’s all I got. Take it easy Internets, and I promise that I’ll be better about posting.

Is it bad when I can’t think of titles anymore?

GBJazzMan| October 29, 2007 9:03 pm

So at some point last night, I went to bed. I remember going to bed. I just don’t remember when. Which kinda sucks because I was watching Monday Night Football. And after watching highlights on SportsCenter, looks like I missed a helluva game. Denver ties it up with almost no time left on the clock, and then Green Bay wins on the first play in overtime.

Apparently the Tigers got a shortstop lastnight in a trade. I’m

not sure if I like the trade, since we traded Jurrigens, who was a solid talent. Also, the short stop we got, Edgar Renteria, is 32. But hell, Dave Dombrowski has put together a Tigers team, that well, doesn’t suck.

I think TV lied to me. A commercial for Brothers brand printers tells me that following Plan B is wearing ugly pastel shirts.  I guess it might mean plan B. B for “Bad Fashion Sense”.

I am so not ready for Nanowrimo. At all. I mean, I do have part of my story plotted and most of the setting ready. I’m just not ready for it mentally. Last year I went into blissfully unaware of the hell I was getting myself into. This year, I know all too well.

And now for your moment of Zen.

Me: God I hate you Math Nerds.

Eric: That’s okay, we hate us too.

Rainy, but good day

GBJazzMan| October 23, 2007 1:38 pm

Today is a typical fall day in Michigan; rainy and damp, but so far it’s been a good day. I did get Qdoba, which always makes for a good day.

I had a therapist appointment today. I think, for the lack of a better term, this time around is gonna be a “One and Done”.  This time, I’m just having touble with anxiety, not depression. Basically what it boils down to is I need to get out and exericse, lay off the carbs and try to focus my thoughts away from things I have no control over.  So I’m go to start walking and taking the other things he mentioned to heart and see if it that works. If it does, sweet. If not, I’ll make another appointment to see someone.

I meet Rachael up at Panera today and I just realized that not only is this the first time I’ve been to Panera with the new laptop, but it’s also the first time I’ve been to Panera without a “I read your e-mail” sticker. I feel kinda nacked. I mean, people are glancing at me suspiciously.

That’s all I’ve got for now, I’m actually going to try to get some planning for my Nano done.

Quarter’s half over

GBJazzMan| October 21, 2007 10:52 pm

My current quarter is over half over, and although I am doing well, I can’t help but feel like I’m slacking. I haven’t kept up to date with my readings as I should and I know that if I continue like this I’ll get my ass kicked in the later quarters.

In an attempt to “get things done”, I purchased a moleskine notebook and using several ideas I found on Lifehacker, I’ve made a planner/idea book out of it. I’m gonna give it a whirl and hopes that it makes me more productive.

Nano is around the quarter and I’m planning on doing some planning for Nano. I do not want to go into it unprepared like I did last year. It was a good experience and and I did enjoy writing Nova Titan, but Mike and I kinda want to use this a script eventually. So I’m atleast going to write a crappy outline, hopefully more.

I broke my laptop. I went to pick it up off my desk at school and the cord was wrapped around the arm of the chair. I broke the end of the plug and the socket where the plug plugs into.  So with some finacial help from the parents, I was able to purchase a new laptop, a Dell 1501 from Sam’s. So far I’m happy with it but the first thing I did was install Linux on it. Vista Home Basic is a “slice of shit”.

That’s all I’ve got right now. Good night. Go Boston.
