zomg convention

GBJazzMan| April 20, 2007 11:38 am

Today is Penguicon, and I’m totally geeked about it. I’ll have my laptop with me so I’ll be bloging about it, if I remember. I’ll probably do it while burning KOL turns.

New Banner

GBJazzMan| April 18, 2007 11:05 pm

The hoobablog’s got a new banner, which I made myself. Lemme know what you think of it. I’ve got the .psd saved, so if you have a kickass idea, the banner might actually change

I’m jealous!

GBJazzMan| 9:58 pm

So while I was at the Food Library stocking yogurt, my Mom was out buying a laptop. It’s an Acer that she got on Special from Staples. Nice computer, but I think I’d ditch Vista. I mean, it asks if you want to do everything. I understand it’s to cut down on malware and such, but damn. It’s like “Matt, are you sure you want to take a dump?” and I respond “Yes, Windows Vista, I want to take a dump.”

Not much else to report in the Land of Lunchbox. I’m looking forward to the Con this weekend. I abused my printing privileges at school to print out the guide book. I also signed up for IEEE today, too.

And I’m done

A challenger appears!

GBJazzMan| April 17, 2007 12:53 pm

I changed the Hoobablog’s theme again. I liked the old theme, but the archive and about page and such didn’t work properly. So I picked a new one. I like it, I’ll just need to do some image editing.

Also, I’ve turned on anon commenting, just keep in mind that I moderate all posts.

Warning: Meaningful rant

GBJazzMan| 12:50 pm

Before I asplode in a ball of righteous anger, I would like to preface this rant by saying I my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the people who were killed in the Virginia Tech shooting yesterday. Also, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of the Virginia Tech. This event was an act of senseless violence and although I’d be lying if I said I knew what they were going through, I can only hope that time heals these wounds.

That being said, Jack Thompson and Dr Phil are idiots. The bodies aren’t even cold, yet these  two “experts” put the blame on violent video games. Call of the police investigation! The answer was under our noses the entire time! If you’re under 30 years of age and snap and start killing people, video games are to blame. Nevermind the fact that according to most of the reports I’ve read don’t mention video games at all. Infact, they mention that he was a disturbed individual who probably had some sort of mental condition.

Now some of you are probably wondering “Matt, why are you taking this so personally?” Well, it’s because I’m a gamer and I have never once thought “You know? That guy’s pissing me off, I should shoot him in the face.” I’ve been playing video games for most of my life, starting with Super Mario like most everyone else in my generation. I’ve played ‘em all, Sim City, Half-Life, Madden, GTA, DDR and even a little World of Warcraft. I’m not a violent person. Angry person? Yeah I have a temper, but not a violent person. I can count on three fingers the number of fist fights I’ve got into in my life, not counting sparring when I was in Tae Kwon Do. And those were all times I defended myself in high school from bullies.

Not only am I a gamer, but a lot of my friends are as well, and I get deeply offended when some nobody lawyer and a snake-oil salesman who have no idea what the hell they’re talking about con someone in the media to give them an open mic and decide to run their mouth. And I don’t think my anger is out of line. I mean, how do you think the Korean-American population would react if Dr Phil had blamed the shootings on the fact that this young man was Korean? I’d think they’d be a little pissed off.

But then again Video Games are the scape goat for this country’s problems. Americans have a long history of this: first it was alcohol, then jazz, then rock and roll, then television, then drugs, and then rap. Video games weren’t the first scape goat, and certianly won’t be the last. Heaven forbid we place the blame where it should be for this disturbing event: a troubled young man who just snapped. But we as Americans don’t want to place the blame where it belongs, we’d rather put it on a convent scape goat.

It’s not like these comments are unexpected. I mean, I’m pretty sure Thompson or McGraw would blame a 100 point drop in the Dow Jones on a new Grand Theft Auto game, it’s the nature of how the comments came out. I mean, we as a nation didn’t even know the shooter’s name and these two “experts” were already blaming video games. You know, it’d be nice if we let the police and the FBI investigate the crime before we start shifting blame on scape goats.

I believe these two aren’t motivated my some deep seeded morality either, or they’d be preaching their anti-video game rhetoric anytime there was a domestic murder, not just these massacres and school shootings. Let them come out anytime someone murders one person and blame it on video games and then I’ll stop thinking that comments like these are desperate attempts to extend their 15 minutes of fame.

I can’t feel my mouth

GBJazzMan| April 16, 2007 10:29 am

This morning I had two fillings done. Nothing too bad, but they numbed me up to do it. I’m waiting for the anesthetic to wear off a little bit more so I can eat something. I pride myself on not needing a bib to eat.

Last night Brad, Spencer and I went and  to see Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theathers. It felt like a 90 minute long episode. Enjoyable, not really what I expected. To be fair, I’m not sure what I expected.

Beyond that, not a whole lot going on in the world of Matt. I’ve a shift at the Food Library a bit later, but right now, I eat!

Quick observation post

GBJazzMan| April 15, 2007 5:34 pm

I’m watching the Pens/Senators playoff game while killing time until the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, and the camera quality on Vs is awful. I mean, you can see anything because the white of the ice washes everything out. Not very good. The CBC feed isn’t bad, if you ignore the “US gov’t censor stack to keep out teh terrerist” snow.

Yesterday was actually a pretty good day

GBJazzMan| 4:32 pm

Erin and Rico’s wedding was beautiful and I pray that they will have  a long and wonderful marriage. The only bad part of the whole wedding thing was the free bar at the reception. I had a rum and coke that had more run that it should and it was nasty bottom shelf rum, too. I drank less than a third of it and it gave me a bad headache.

It was Poker at Eric’s and I played extremely well. I won the first game, I was the chip leader when I broke the Omaha game, 2nd in the second game and third in the last game. I played really well, with hands and without hands. Like I made a move against Will with 67d, and got him to lay down top pair after the flop. I was really impressed with my play and the extra 20 bucks I made will help, too.

Today’s been a lazy day. Some cleaning, the Wings kicking some Calgary ass, and Office Space. So yeah, lazy day.

New theme, lololol

GBJazzMan| April 13, 2007 11:31 pm

I have a new theme. Wasn’t feeling the grass anymore. Enjoy

A little bit of introspection

GBJazzMan| 10:59 pm

Today, my friends Brett and Jen had they’re first child, Jacob. Mother and son are doing well, which is good, and I can’t wait to see a picture of the little rugrat. Tomorrow my cousin gets married.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m letting life get past me. I mean, I’m twenty-five, I can count the number of times on one hand the number of girls I’ve dated, yet I’m not lonely or disappointed in myself. I mean, yeah, it’d be nice to be a relationship, but right now I’m enjoying the bachelor bit. If I want to go play poker, or nerd bomb with crew, or just sit in my room and read articles about SSH tunnelling, I can and not feel guilty about neglecting a relationship.

And it’s not like I have outlandish taste in women either. I know I’m not some bodybuilder or anything, but I have simple tastes in women: 1) no pyschos, 2) the ability to care on an intellegent conversation and 3) no Canadians. Being a Geek’s a plus.

So yeah, it’d be nice to have a meaningful relationship, but I’m not too worried about it. Also, being in a relationship would also require me know single women.

In other not thinky news, work kinda sucked and I have a new TV! Let’s hear it for ADD blog post endings!
